......clean your throttle body! I cleaned my 4Runner and pickup throttle bodies today. Okay, I cleaned the pickup's carb, but anyway, the 4Runner is running a bit smoother, it was really gunked up in there. It only took like half an hour to get it realllllly shiny. I'm gonna do the ISR mod as soon as I find a place that can mandrel bend 3" piping...I don't know of any places that are close

If you find a shop that can do it let the rest of us know what they'll charge to make a couple more. I'd love to have one of those.

I don't think my 3.0 would be same as your 3.4, but if I find a shop if someone wants to send me the 3.4L type I'm sure they'd make those, too.

Little update: Decided to check out my gains, I went on a little 40 mile cruise. Definitely noticed a HUGE improvement. I always track my mileage, my best guess (won't know until tank is gone) is a 3mpg improvement. Yes, my TB was really grimey. I also noticed it doesn't bog down anymore. I thought the bogging was just something I had to live with, due to the transmission & engine age, it wasn't really that bad so I just let it go....but it's noticeably smoother now, especially when I floor it from 2nd gear.

How exactly did you clean it? Did you take it all the way off, or did you spray up in the air intake part. I need details man, details!!

Spray? I am cheap...I got the least expensive carb/fuel injector cleaner I could find, it didn't even have a spray top, I just got a toothbrush, dipped the brush in cleaner and went at it like a retarded chimp. I had my brother step on the gas to open the TB (also held it open with spring after I realized he was PURPOSELY trying to squish my hand in it) and I just put the brush in as far as it could go and scrubbed and scrubbed and scrubbed. You can get the whole thing clean without taking it off, I believe. I had the brush at least past the TB, I just cleaned and cleaned until the brush came back clean everytime. It's really not hard, you just have to take off the one hose to get into it, not hard at all!

That is too funny! I will definitly do that tomorrow. I have opened it up my TB before and it is BAD, lots of dust over here in the arm pit of Oregon.

So did you have the engion running the whole time?

Thanks!!

NoooOOoOooOOOoooo no engine running. I didn't think it was a good idea to have the engine sucking in unfiltered air. You don't need to have it on to open the TB, just pull the spring assembly towards you or have an "assistant" step on the gas (that works a little better) I went to Wal Mart and go the "house brand" (Tech something) carb/injector cleaner for 83 cents (incl tax!!!) and when I was done cleaning I dumped the rest in the gas tank.

los_gato,

have you ever had your engine checked for the sludge problem? I thought the 3.0's were bad and there was a recall on these at one point or another. might be worth investigating as you may find some more places to clean and gain more efficiency. just a thought.

I think the 3.0 that you are thinking of is the 3.0 that is in the Highlander and Sienna. It is a different beast entirely. That said I had nice gains after cleaning out my throttle body a couple of weeks ago.

OK. I could have sworn I read a thread on Toyota 4x4 Pickup something about the older 3.0's on the 4runners. oh well.

Unless there was blowing dust in the air or a lot of bugs hovering around I doubt it would hurt to have it run for a short time, parked, without the air filter hooked up. I've cleaned mine before and decided to shoot some carb cleaner in there with the engine running. Worked pretty good, but mine wasn't very dirty so I noticed no difference..

Well maybe it wouldn't be bad for it, but just the same (and since I didn't have a spray bottle) I didn't do anything with the engine on.

With the intake tube removed the engine probably won't run since the ecu can't meter the air coming in.

did you try to start it with the intake hose off? the instructions I followed said to pull the intake hose and crank her up and spray into the TB. I found that weird because the engine won't run with it diconnected and I also thought the same thing you did and didn't want unfiltered air going in.

sorry, I didn't read fatty's post above before posting this so I guess I repeated him.

The engine won't run since air isn't being drawn through the MAF sensor. Just clean it the best you can and put it together.
