checkerboard means it's blank (i.e. not white or black or anything).

transparent

fill the background with white to have it a solid white background.

if you really want to you can have it show as white instead of checkerboard to indicate transparent background, but the checkerboard is less confusing.

advanced background change..how to.

double click your background layer on your layers pallette (F7 to toggle your layers pallette on & off) and make it into an normal 'editable' layer. then, make a new layer (layer>>new>>new layer). this layer will also be checkerboard (transparent)

you can change the order of the way the layers are stacked by clicking & dragging the layer you want to move above or below the layer your truck is on (this is done on your layers pallette). this will enable you to change the background to whatever colour or picture you want. you can have as many layers for the background as you want, just click on the lil 'eyeball' to make it viewable, or invisible.

photoshop..where the learning curve is never ending ..good luck!

When you click and hold the eraser icon, three versions of the earser will appear. The top one will erase and leave the white. The other two will make the checkered background, which is nothing/transparent. Once you use the bottom two and then switch back to the top one, it will continue the checkered effect. The bottom eraser, magic eraser, erases areas with similar color.
