front end making some horrific nioses in 4wd

So I'm up on Mt Hood a week ago and I put the Runner into 4wd and it starts sounding and feeling (through the pedals and the tranny tunnel) like I'm grinding walnuts in the front right hub/wheel. So here's the specifics, I left the hubs locked and was running in 2wd up the highway for sometime (stupid I know) but the wethere was pretty bad blah blah...

In 4wd with the hubs unlocked it makes no noticable niose

in 2wd with the hubs locked same deal, no noise so to speak

in 4wd with the hubs locked its poping and grinding.

I'm thinking it's my CV, but is there a chance it's my hub and what's the best way to test and find what it is...

Cheers and no Worries

sounds like it probably is the front cv's. cause from what your saying it only does it when there is a load on them. whitch is when they would make noise on any front drive vehicle.

Normally CV's dont go out all of a sudden. Usually they "click" for a long time before they "clunk or pop". Jack it up , engage the hub & spin wheel--you may be able to pinpoint the noise better.. Were you driving in snow/ice on the highway with hubs engaged?? Maybe not fully engaged coz of snow/ice in there..??

IM WILLING TO BET YOU SHOULD TURN OFF YOUR CAPS!!

However....CV's sound about right. The hubs dont really have any parts that can cause that noice, without knowing that you catastrophically (sp?) broke something before. I have drive many miles hubs locked before, with no damage to the hubs.

Also, try pulling the hubs off, and check for debri like refugio said. Thats a possibilty.

Cheers
