Who's hubs break the most -

I wanted to know..

Who here has done a bit of wheeling and has broken a hub, or two. or more. What kind of hubs did/do you have?
Why did it break?
What were you doing at the time it broke?
If you broke something else in the front drive axle, along with or instead of the hub, What was it and why'd it happen?

Also, I've heard Warn hubs tend to break easily, are they going to break doing light wheeling around here, or do they still take a bit of abuse to break?

Anyone got pictures they could post?

Haven't broken any hubs yet (aisin manual hubs), but I have blown/snapped a few cv's from just hard wheeling or having the boot torn off without realising and driving it. Only problem I've ever had with my hubs is that sometimes it would get a little tough to lock em in, so I'd take em apart, clean and regrease em. Vola, problem solved.

Warn regular hubs suck and do break. Warn Premium hubs are pretty much bomb proof....ask anyone with a dedicated rock crawler.

OEM (Asin) hubs are proven to be pretty strong and reliable. I wheeled the crap out of mine with no problems.

Your almost guaranteed to bust a CV axel before a hub...

So the Warn Premiums are comparable with the Aisins? I keep hearing that Aisins are less likely to break than Warns, but maybe they meant the warn regular hubs

IMO you are much more likely to break a CV than a Warn Premium or Aisin hub. I've had Warn Premium's on my '92 for several years, never a problem and they're so purty!

Thats a loaded question....

on the face of it youll find many mor bused aisins than Warns, but thats because there are like a billion of them out there so percentage wise youd expect that.

i mean who wants to pony up like $500 for warn hubs when our trucks come stock with aisins that hold up fine but for the most demanding extream stuff. (and why arnt you running drive hubs for those applications anyway?!?!)

I have Warn Premiums, and am on my third set, however, I have never busted a CV (well, at least not til posting that! LOL). The first set broke on a pretty gnarly obstacle working it HARD. I bought them used - that may have been a factor. The second set functioned fine, but were beat up enough that it was hard to turn the dial, so I invoked the lifetime warranty and got another set.

I have NEVER heard of an AISIN breaking.

Warns are MUCH cheaper and easier to find IMHO than AISINs. I have never had any issue getting them replaced under warranty. Save your ADD plates as spares, and you're good to go.

If you're paying $500 for Warn Premiums, we need to talk 'cuz I need to be your parts/accessories guy. Unless you're buying 3 sets at a time...

LOL Warn Premiums don't cost more than $200 IIRC

I run Warn Premium hubs on my FJ40.
I wheel the hell out of that rig, and it weighs in at a portly 5000 lbs.

I've never broken a warn premium hub.

To be honest, I'd rather break a hub than a birfield.
Hubs are easier to chagne out than birfields (or CV's) are.

Popular opinion among most of the Toyota crowd is that OEM Aisin manual hubs are by far superior to any others out there...and I agree.

What breaks in the hubs first?

Have not broken one "yet". Have some off my parts rigs. I was going to carry one as a spare. Anything in them I should be looking at/for that would show they have been "overstress/ready to break" before I toss one into the "trail parts" box.

Havent broke my warn premiums either and I did alot of knarly stuff thus far. Havent broken a cv either, but the T100's are stronger.

Note also the different axles - seems to just be the Toyota ones.

Bumpin' - the one I broke bent a little flat splined piece under the dial.

I know a guy who broke a warn hub up here, on a SASed 90 4Runner. The hub body literally split in half and went flying off of the truck.
