I am looking for a diagram that shows the 4 bolts that holds the rear brake plate assembly to the main axle housing on a 1988 Toyota 4runner. It's the 4 bolts that are located behind the brake shoes. The nuts are located on the back side of the backing plate near the bleeder screw. I went to the Toyota dealer in Mobile, Alabama and was told on two separate ocassions that this type bolt does not hold the backing plate on. They tell me that all 4 bolts are the same however, on my vehicle both rear axles has three bolt that are identical and one which is different. The bolt I need has a stud sticking out toward the brake shoes for part of the brake assembly to pivot on..If anyone knows of a diagram with this information or someone who happens to have an extra bolt they are willing to sell please contact me. Those are pressed in studs, not bolts. The backing plate is held on by the pressed on studa on top of the axle bearing cup.
why do you need to replace Them? They generally are a pain to remove.
To get access to get that stud in there you will need to remove the bearing retainer clip and press the bearing cup and backing plate off
I was removing the rear wheel bearing and the puller I was using broke. When it broke it caused one of the studs to break. I had the puller rewelded and used two of the remaining studs to attach the puller to remove the bearing. The broke one was no problem to remove, just a few light taps and it fell out. On the photo you sent, all three studs are the same. Is the one located on the bottom that you can't see the same as the other three or is it different?
I was half asleep when I was looking at your photo before. I looked at it again tonight and the stud on front is the one I broke. It is the one that is also used to hold the part of the brakes which pivots and has the two cables connected to it. It also has a keeper on the end. Is the picture you posted a 1988? The dealer tells me this part doesn't exits on a 1988 Toyota 4runner. They say all four studs are the same but in the picture it shows the one on front is different.This picture looks exactly like my 1988 Toyota rear axle.

If your not on a first name basis with your Toyota dealers parts Manager and all the lackeys I could see some being to lazy to look and see 3 studs are the same and one is the odd ball the E-Brake pivots on.
