Flex-A-Lite Fan Wiring - FLX165

Article By:

Application Vehicle: 1992 4Runner, 3.0L V6

When I installed my FLX-165, I ordered the optional cut-off switch that was advertised to be able to turn off the fan for mud and water crossings.
I was disappointed when, after following Flex-A-Lite?s wiring instructions, the switch did not turn the fan off, but turned the fan on.
This was unacceptable.

Parts:

FLX-165
Buss Aux. Fuse Block (Part # BP/15600-06-20) (optional but highly recommended)
12V 40A SPDT relay (Jameco Part # 148582)
Flex-A-Lite switch (or any 3 terminal lighted switch)

Make sure you get a SPDT relay or a normally closed SPST relay.
The reason is that you don?t want to have to have the switch turned ?on? for the fan to work normally.
This would constantly drain current(~50-100mA) from your battery.

The way the circuit works is that when the switch is in the ?off? position, the fan is supplied power.
When the switch is in the ?on? position, the relay disconnects the power to the fan, thus shutting it off.

Leave the terminal marked ?87? open (ie. Don?t connect it to anything).
