So I followed through and replaced my existing Amsoil gear oil in my manual tranny tonite with Redline MT-90. I took it for a little spin to get the transmission gears lubricated. After about 2 minutes going from street sign to street sign, I noticed an immediate difference. I mean NIGHT and DAY difference. After the two minutes, the shifting was noticeably smoother.

The big test will be tomorrow in the morning. My shifting in the morning is the pretty bad, especially from N to 1, 1 to 2. But if tonite is any indication of tomorrow morning, I'll be all smiles driving to work.

Keep checking this thread guys, and i'll give you all a day by day update for a few days.

But again, I'm pretty much convinced that what I read about MT-90 is right on the money.

As I mentioned, I used that stuff for years in my Supra's trannie. Great stuff.

I ran Redline in my Eclipse for 7 years and can't wait to get it in the Runner since the notchiness is bugging me a little.

 

Good to hear, Bob. I just ordered 4 quarts of the stuff too. I got it from www.myoilshop.com as they seemed to have pretty good pricing. Now with your euphoric report, I can't wait to get the stuff in. I had been using mobil 1. It was better than the stock stuff that was in it before--the syncros made less noise, but the shifting was still very "notchy". So, I think I'll move the mobil 1 to the diffs and go with the mt-90 for the tranny and transfer case. Let us know what you think after you've spent some time with it!

I noticed the same results in my Celica.

 

Ok fellas, MT-90 passed the (LA) cold morning test with flying colors.

As i mentioned before, the notchiness was the worst in the morning. It doesnt too cold out here in the mornings (mid to high 40s), but again, its worst in the cold. Before i fired up the engine, I did some shifting while in N. My best subjective guess is that its about 75% less notchy. I'd say that there were more than a few times this past 2-3 months where I'd really have to "force it" into gear.

So after firing it up, I pulled out of hte garage and down the back alley. I really threw it into 2nd because of habit and was really surprised that it went into 2nd so smoothly. And after a few rows on the way to the freeway, it was pure joy.

This afternoon, i went to the auto parts store to get some more fluids for the 4runner. The shifting was near perfect like when I got it.

In anycase, I'll post more updates this week, but so far so good. And i have a strong suspicion that its only going to get better.

Good to hear the shifting is better. I may replace the Amsoil I recently put in mine. I wish I knew before I oredered the Amsoil and changed out my oil.

However, I may have fixed my shifting problem. 3.4Runner started the post. I had the same thought, but wasn't sure if I should do it until I read his post:

Anyway, I overfilled it. (Overfill, it sounds so bad) I took the gear shifter out and poured 1/4 of a quart in the shifter hole from the spare Amsoil that I still had. I should have done that when I replaced the shifter bushing two weeks ago, but I didn't think about it.

It seems to work, and 1/4 of a quart is not much at all. You could probably get in that much by filling from the fill hole. I haven't been able to drive the truck much since I am using my work vehicle all week. But, hopefully that has fixed it.

The MT-90 sounds like the way to go though.

I tried that too but it didn't help. Thus, I bought the MT-90. I tell ya, night and day difference.

Did you do anything special before putting the MT 90 on like flushing the tranny? Or did you just drained it and refilled it with MT-90? TIA.

Nope, just drained and filled. Just like the time before when I changed from whatever was in there to Amsoil.

I've read that Redline fluid should not be used in the last gen Supra's 6 speed tranny due to it causing seal damage;is anybody aware of this and is it Supra tranny specific and shouldn't be a worry in Toyota's trucks?

 

Really?!?
I have never heard of it. The MR2 guys love the redline, so it may be just a Supra specific problem.

 

I'm thinking it's just that specific 6 speed.

 

Could be the MTL that gives them trouble rather than the MT-90? Redline makes a variety of transmission fluids.....

yes, when i was researching new MT fluids, i read more than once about people having problems with MTL. this was not because of the MTL itself, but because the people using the MTL should have been using MT-90 instead.

that said, it seems that some vehicles also better take to one or the other. its a mystery to me that i dont have the knowledge to figure out.

I was telling my friend about MT90 after reading this post that I was thinking of installing it in both my 92 and 86 toy trks,and his comment was (he owns toys also)I don't want to have my trans start leaking because of the synthetic ,I'll stick with petroleum based gear oil and use Lucas additive.........Any comments to this?
