White expanding Dell laptop screen of nothingness!

Hey computer guys,

I have a Dell Inspiron 4000. Ok, she's old, but she's very reliable until now. The problem with my LCD screen can be described like this:

A few months ago, the screen would flicker. I would have to give it a little love tap on the back of the LCD screen and all things would be fine. Now what happens is that when I turn on the computer, there will be a white spot in the center of the screen and it will slowly expand outwards until the whole screen is white. And no, i dont take any hallucinagens!

So is this a problem with the screen? Or the graphics card? Or an inverter?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Bob

My first guess would be the screen. They're replacable, and Dell's support site usually includes instructions on how to do it.

I actually had the same problem with an old Inspiron 5000e, and for me at least it was the lcd and since it was a UXGA, 1600x1200 screen they wanted nearly $900 to replace the screen alone.

Better off going new, lay the old dog to rest.
