External Drive....

Windows jacked up an external drive I have, and now it tells me that it cannot be read. Anyone used a good recovery program that works?

I had a terra bit that got that message. Ran the windows disk scan and opted for the repair. No more error message and data (movies) was fine. Hope this helps.

You could try using disk dump if you have any *nix experience, but without knowing more about what is wrong I can't really suggest a repair/recovery strategy.

What exactly is wrong with the drive? Does it make any strange sounds like "whirrrrrrrrRRRRRRRRrrrrr CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK" or "Whirrrrr-click whirrrrrr-click?" Does it power up? What is Windows saying? Have you tried the drive with a different machine?

it could also be the connector inside the hard drive maybe. if you do a search on youtube for your model on tearing it apart, you might could take it out and put it in a desktop and see if you can get it to load up and at least get the stuff you might need off of it!

Have you tried it in another pc? I have used a couple programs but they are on my other computer and the hd crashed so hopefully and save the data when i get the computer up and running with the new hd!
