error when changing startup options

I am trying to make my 5 year old computer run faster, I have 4 gigs ram, and am maxed. Anyways, I am trying to edit out all the crap that doesn't need to run at startup. So when I made my changes (I researched everything on that menu before making changes) and when I restart I come up with an error message stating that I am in Safe startup. I change back to regular startup, make my changes and viola, same problem. Any ideas?

when I try and make changes to the start up, if I click start in regular mode, it rechecks all the programs and starts normally. Even AIM and things like that...
