Wanted: More Midbass
Ok, here's my set up
4" infinity reference up front in stock location. (35w RMS)
6.5" infinity reference components (70w RMS) in stock rear location (but i made a mdf panel to secure it into the stock location).
pioneer dehp 7500 deck with 4v pre outs
mtx 4001 amp (200w RMS @ 4 ohms)
mtx 12" sub (300w RMS @ 4 ohms)
The sound is good, but when i turn the sub off, at high volumes i get alot of distortion, and yes, i have my HPF set at 80hz, (any lower i get huge dist.)
the distortion is not noticeable when the sub is on, but when it's not, it's there. Also, i have barely any bass coming out. What speak's (or amp for my speakers?) can you guys recommend to get some more mid's out of my system. What will an amp do if i hook my speakers up to it? (more distortion, less distortion, louder, clearer?) and does any body have a good place to mount speakers up front in a 1st gen 4runner? I was thinking about making kickpanel speakers, but i'm a behemoth (6'4) and there is barely enough room as it is (and it's a 5spd). I hear door panel speakers get you alot of rattling as well.
Also, if dynamatting or sound deadening, would i sound deaden the out, or 1/4's, or do i dynamat behind the inner panels?
Thx for all responses,
Greg

I don't really see you getting any midbass out of 4" drivers. IMO to get some decent midbass you will need a set of 6.5" drivers. I think that kicks would be the easiest way to improve your midbass. You may consider cutting into your doors or having some 6.5s mounted to the outer door pannels. If you think you could fab kicks I don't see why you couldn't adapt them to the lower part of your doors.
I have and would use mat or a spray/brush on deadener on the inner door skin, the door behing the pannel and the inside of the pannel. I don't think you would have such bad rattling with a door pannel mount if you deaden heavily and used some closed cell foam (volara or ensolite).
An amp would help but I don't thing you will get what you want without larger speakers.

If you want to improve midbass, go ahead and get a nice 4 channel amp - something about 50 to 90 watts rms x 4. For the fronts set the crossover to 80hz HPF, and set the rears to about 50hz (HPF). Those settings combined with your HU's 80hz HPF should get you a bit better extension on your midbass.
If that still doesnt suffice then kickpanels are your only answer. I built a set for my second gen and I love them! My 6.5s will play down to about 50hz with a LOT of output with zero distortion....I love it!

Yuppers. He was saying to move the 5.25"/6.5" to the front doors....but unless you want to spend hours ironing out buzzes and rattling from the door, I suggest kicks. My 6.5s sound like most people's 8" subs...lol
