Im thinking of purchasing the 3rd gen Tacoma but im scared of the rusting frames of the past

 

There's a five year warranty on the frame. The rusty frames were made by Dana Corp in the U.S. It is still costing Toyota a bundle. I'm fairly confident the problem has been corrected. I'm getting ready to get a '16 tomorrow. There are only about 6 4x4 Tacomas on most dealers lots at this point.

 

The salesman told me the frames are still made in the us. Its got me worried that they just kept the same manufacturer and problems

 

I'm trading a 2000 Tacoma that was undercoated. The frame broke at the right rear shock and near the gas tank. The truck was otherwise perfect. I'll be OCD about climbing under this one and checking. There used to be franchises such as Zeibert that under coated cars. The closest one to me is about 90 miles away. Rust is not really a thing in Virginia.

 

im in virginia too but we do sometimes get harsh winters that kinda scare me about rust

 

There's a class action lawsuit filed for this rusting issue. Not sure if it applies to this model year vehicle but you should be able to find more info online.

 

Well holy old thread. I'm not aware of any class action on the third generation Tacomas but Toyota has a recall campaign in certain states. I've received notice that they will inspect it for free and under coat it if needed. I have five Toyotas so this one only has 36k miles right now. I've procrastinated on taking it in. There's no rust but I better have it documented in case I need a new frame in a few years. So far I've had no problems with the truck but the stereo system interface with iPhone sucks. It also had a recall on the blower motor fan which they replaced for free. I'm looking forward to (maybe) getting some new tires this spring.
