'79 to '86 Rear end swap, is it possible?
So I have finally decided to repair all the rust holes in my 1986 2wd pickup and after I pulled the bed off I noticed a lot of slack in the rear end. I could turn one wheel hub 1/16 of a revolution before the other wheel hub would begin to spin. Is this abnormal? If it is I have a rear end out of a 1975 pickup with supposedly 4:11 gear ratio in it. The major question is can I take the guts out of the '75 rear end and put them in mine or can I at least interchange the hubs?

I don't think so. But I could be wrong.
To the best of my knowledge, Toyota used 8" rear axles on all PUs until '79. From then on it was only standard for all 4WDs, and optional for the 2WD 3/4 Ton and 1 Ton trucks, while most 79-95 2WD 1/2 Ton models* had the 7.5". So your '86 is likely a 7.5", and the '75 likely an 8". If it's a '79, then there's a 50/50 chance it's a 7.5". In which case you could swap 3rd members, ONLY. Axleshafts are different length, and there are no hubs to interchange technically(since they're part of/integral to the axleshaft).
On the freeplay/slop in the differential, that doesn't necessarily sound too excessive/abnormal to me.

Hub(Wheel): Unit to which wheel is bolted.

All 2wd and 4wd T100's, '00-06 Tundra's, and ?? Sequoia's use a newer/stronger 8" 2-pinion diff. Tacoma 4x4's and Tacoma PreRunner's that don't come with the electric locker (aka "non-TRD), as well as V6 Tacoma 4x2's also came with this diff.
