What is this breather hose & why is it all oily?

In my engine compartment (3.4L), on the driver's side, about half-way back to the firewall, is a hose that comes up that has a breather-type end on it. It is clamped to the side of the wheel well wall. From that breather-type end, and all the way down the hose, it is all oily & cruddy. What is that thing and is it normal to look like that? I dont have a pic, but I can post one later if needed.

That sounds like the breather for the front diff. If it's spitting oil, your diff is likely overfilled.

It's a safety feature in that the diff being able to breath protects the seals, but it shouldn't be spitting oil unless it's overfilled or has an air locker with a bad o-ring.
