What is this?

Guys,

(Flame and idiot suit on)...

I own a 98 4WD: On the driver's side rear passenger area...if you look underneath that area inside the frame, that is the gas tank right? If so, has anyone removed it? If not, what is it?

This relates to my Xterra step tube project.

So you are welding slider/ step type things to the frame which is very close to the gas tank. Temporarily removing the gas tank is not a bad idea. Maybe you are asking how to remove the tank for welding or how to safely weld with the tank in place.

I can't answer these questions but hopefuly this is what you are asking and a good answer will be here soon. I'm a little curious myself so maybe i'll look around to see what I can find.

You shouldn't have to remove a gas tank just because you are welding near one. Muffler shops use cutting torches all the time under a vehicle when removing and installing mufflers and tail pipes, and they never remove the gas tank. But don't take my word for it.

No, he's got to drill holes through the frame rail and he wants to know if that thing is indeed the gas tank, or something else. He wants to put bolts through, and that thing is in the way. I don't know what 3rd gens look like underneath so I don' t know where the gas tank is.

Bingo! Now you know why all the sliders are welded on and Kongs and Roger Borwn use self taping bolts.

That is the gas tank and taking it out will be a ton of work. Alos there is no clearnace, better not put any bolt heads or nuts by that thing.

Up in smoke you'll go.

Hey Schaef:

Do you know what size self-tapping bolts either one of them uses?
