truetrac

Got a 95 4runner got thinking about running trutrac front and rear. Vs. detroit in rear and lockrite up front.
(anyone running this combo)??

This is a dailly driver in california with 100 plus miles on the weekends.

80% freeway rest trails sand ect when I can get the time..

anyone have any input?

There are a lot of guys here on the board with a lot more experience than me on this topic. But I have about the same rig and have given this a lot of thought.

I've only run into one situation where I really lost traction on the front and rear at the same time. I don't think a Torsen (TruTrac) would have helped much since all 4 wheels were on the same shale bed.

Torsens tend to switch the torque from side to side or split the torque.

I think a TruTrac in the front would be a good idea. But in the back I think for about the same amount of money...maybe even less...you could retrofit a Toy electric locker.

If the idea of doing the wiring and drilling to fit the Toy electric locker is a little intimidating, then definitely go with front and rear TruTracs.

Just don't expect the TruTrac to bail you out as well as a full locker.

Trutrac is a limited slip diff, right? It does not completely lock?

Toy electric locker

Wish I had the skills to hook up an electric locker.

My main concern is Drivability with the amount of millege I'll rack up vegas, SF, AZ... Ect. with a full locker vs. (LSD)

A TruTrac is a torque-sensing, gear-driven or Torsen differential. It will shift the torque at each wheel on the fly, but if the vehicle is stopped and the TruTrac was not engaged it will work like a regular differential and spin the tire that has the least resistance. In that instance, you have to apply the brakes slowly to increase the resistance and get the torsen to engage.

If you're worried about the install of the electric locker and still want the smoothness of a normal diff, then I think you've made a good choice.

what about an ARB?

I would consider an ARB air locker system. to keep cost down you could start with one up front or out back and throw one on the other end later. The aussies down under seem to swear by them. Alternatively I think Toyota is offering a limited slip diff now for the rear pot. You could put one of those out back and the arb in front and you've got a system that won't penalize you in the MPG dept. just my 0.02$. Aviator
