Supercharger and Sulfur Questions from Newbie
All,
Any advice you can provide is greatly appreciated. I'm going to install (or have installed) the TRD supercharger in my 03 4Runner. The dealer quoted $5300 parts and labor. Any thoughts on this price?
Second,
I understand there might be a TSB for the sulfur smell and from what I gathered it includes new cat converters and a flash for the computer. Is this true? Is there any place to get the TSB if I have to argue with my dealer about it?
Thanks!!

My father has a Lexus SUV GX 470 or something like that....and when you floor it you get a sulfur smell, so he took it in for service and they said they had a fix for the exhaust smell (i'm thinking, what is it a plug?) apparently its a computer upgrade and I havent asked him about the fix whether it worked, but I havent heard him complain...so i assume it worked....

yeah, there's a TSB for the sulfur smell. do you have a v8 or v6?
yes, the fix works ... those of us who have taken ours in have been pleased with the reduction of sulfur smell.
you can get the TSBs here:
for the v6: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/showth...ghlight=sulfur
for the v8: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/showth...ghlight=sulfur

I paid $4700 installed. Dont let them fool you they have room to move on that price. The sulphur smell is related to the cat converter, and should be fixed for free. Myself and friend in town both had the smell and got it fixed for free.
Make sure the install goes well there have been problems with the ecu making the truck run poorly, there is a fix from TRD but you have to ask for it. Doe a search on my name and you will see the problem with the ecu and the fix, I also have posted 1/4 times from a track and I dynoed the truck after the fix. Long story short my SC 03 V8 wasnt any faster then a stock 2wd V8. THe ecu was mapped all wrong, made the truck slower then stock and gas mpg went down to 11-12mph in the city. That has all been fixed, but I would check for posts under my name and read the whole story, so you will recognize the signs if the problem happend to you too. Not all SC got it.

yes, twilson, the sulfur smell will be fixed for free for anyone whose truck falls within the VIN range and has less than 80,000 miles. it will get rid of the majority of the smell, but not all of it. they will have to replace the cat converter and reflash the ECU to program it with some updated 2004 info.
saps, don't let your dealership try to tell you that the sulfur smell is "normal" or that toyota has specifically said not to do anything to the cat converter -- that is old, old information ... if you want to avoid that problem, definitely print out a copy of the TSB to take in with you. they may want to drive your truck to see if they can "replicate the problem" and that's fine because they'll get that smell easily ... then they'll order the parts for you (if they aren't in stock) and have you come back for a few hours when the parts get in. after they get in, you'll get a new smell from the new cat having been welded on, but most of the sulfur smell will have disappeared or at least diminished greatly.
many of us here at yotatech have already had this TSB performed successfully - just be sure to take in a copy of the TSB for reinforcement if they try to tell you that there isn't a fix.
