I'm considering one of two systems for my 99 4runner. Besides the price, is there a noticeable difference in ride quality, travel, etc... Both systems seem reasonable but are there any major differences? I'm aware of the information Steve posts on his website, "FAQ 17" about this comparision but I want to see if someone has used both systems.

Can anyone tell me what they've experienced with either system?

The SS lift is a complete lift. All the little things that you may want to add to the "complete" OME lift. It uses Tundra TRD coils and LC coils for the rear. I hear that the LC coils are soft and flex better than the OME coils. I have also that if you tow, the LC coils are too soft and the OME coils are a better choice.

The OME lift is probably just the 4 coils and 4 shocks.

If you go with either the Toytec of the OME from Rocky Road you will need to add a couple of things (Panhard bar drop, e-brake relocate, diff drop)

 

I think the SS 7.2 uses OME 890 coils with two 10mm trim packers.

I bought an OME set up and I like it. I think where I'll run into issues is once I'm getting ready to add bumpers. If I were you I would get the SS 1.2 and save yourself alot of hassle.

 

You could always make a "hybrid" system like I did. I'm using the shorter LC coils in the rear and OME 882's in the front. While the SS systems are complete and do a great job, I got 3" of lift up front and 3.75" in the rear and have been very pleased with the performance of my rig overall. I can't imagine an open diff rig being much more capable off road than mine has been. My kit was ~$600 complete.

 

I've heard good things about both, but most seem to prefer the SS 7.2 set up. I plan to go with the Sonoran Steel front suspension set up (I have a Tacoma) when it comes time for a lift.

This guy has tried pretty much all OME configurations and helped put together Sonoran Steel's lift systems, it seems. Pretty good read.

I must have been looking at one of the other of his lifts. Yes you are right. The 7.2 uses OME 890 coils with 10mm trim packers.

I had the 890 coils on mine for a couple of years. I really liked the ride, flex and capacity. I did swap out to the 891s for more lift and capacity. The 891s don't flex quite as well as the 890s but still are nice.
