My alternator finally gave up the ghost :)

Coming home today I noticed the battery light illuminated and an 11.9 volt reading on the ScanGauge. I've owned the truck since new, do all of my own maintenance, and just recently installed a new Interstate battery.

I'd say 395,906 miles on the original alternator is pretty commendable.

At that mileage I bet a set of brushes might be all you need

Perhaps it's only the regulator inside the alternator that has died. It's the one with a heatsink and it's right behind the rear cover of the alternator.
It's the one marked as 27700A in the diagram in the link below:

Agree. I may tinker with the old one when I have some time, but at this point I need to just get the truck functional again. I purchased one from a Toyota dealer online - $110 cheaper (shipped) than the local dealer...

Great, I'll refer back to the link once the old unit is on my bench.

I have the one from my '97 on the bench if you want to tinker and rebuild yours.

I'm thinking this will be in my near future as well. Every time my single 12" sub hits a medium sized bass note, every single one of my lights dims pretty hard. I installed a brand new Optima red top about 6 months ago. Nearly 400k miles is absolutely impressive! That just goes to show you how reliable Toyota products are. I'm sitting at 274k myself.

All good again. I received the Toyota-rebuilt alternator today and installed it. My values are back to normal and everything worked as it should during a 30-mile shakedown cruise.

As an aside, I purchased this from a Toyota dealer in Richmond, VA. With shipping, they were still more than $120 cheaper than my local dealer - for the exact same Toyota-remanufacted part. It gets better - when I looked at the actual Toyota box, it showed that it shipped from the local Maryland Toyota parts warehouse, to Richmond, VA, and back to me in MD. Sometimes it's better to just quietly shake your head in disbelief...
