Why did you sell it? 4-runners generally have small engines so uh gas should not have been that big an issue??? Get an older 2nd or 1st generation one then?

I loved the 2.7L .Great gas mileage and satisfactory power .I had 200km on the engine and body .No major problem .The only things that i repaired or replace are below .

-Exhaust
-one set of front and back brakes
-front left sway bar bushing
-spark plugs/wires

I replace her with a 09 Civic SI sedan .I do a long drive to work .The Civic will save me money in gas .
