Ignition switch problem

I have an 96 automatic 4-runner that will not allow you to go to the off position with the key when shutting off the vehicle. The key will go to the ACC position until you move the shifter and use a few choice words, this is getting very frustrating. Is there a switch in the shifter assembly that would cause this?

Ignition switch problem

Maybe I was not clear, I know the vehicle must be in park before shutting the vehicle off. If you restart the vehicle and move the shifter to low then back to park while appling the brake the key will sometimes go to the off postion allowing me to remove the key from the ignition. This does not always work though. Matman
