Sears had the 75/35 and the 34R for the same price. They said the 34R was on backorder but the 75/35 was in stock. Not realizing there was a difference in performance between the two, I let them try to put in the 75/35. It's mounted on it's side. I checked the website and now I see that the CCA's for the 34 are 980, while they are 910 for the 35. Will I notice a difference, especially on colder days? I was actually hoping the truck would start a little quicker (maybe it was alright with the old battery and my expectations are too high).

 

I'd be more worried about it being mounted on its side. Not that it will hurt it, but that it might not stay secure in a rollover. As for the cca - it shouldn't matter, that is still a lot.

if.. he has a rollover, his battery's condition will likely be low on the checklist.

Im curious to see how they mounted it sideways? Is the battery held down well?

It they are mounting the battery on the side I would not do it. The coils are designed to be held upright. On the side they have a greater chace of comming into contact with themselves and shorting out - esp if you are ofraoding & it is bumpy. If it is just the posts on the side it is OK other than being a PITA. It is harder to undo them & also harder to jump start the battery. There is the risk of the battery sliding (if not secured tightly) & shorting out if in contact with other meatal parts.

 

An Optima has closed cells, and it's designed to be mounted on it's bottom or side.

 

I guess there is some concern over such a heavy object actually ripping throught the vehicle into the passenger compartment.

I agree it isn't likely, but safety first right?

Well, which path will the battery take? Fly thru the hood, then jump thru the windshield, or fly right thru the fire wall?

If they where the same price I would go and see if Sears would get you the 34 when they get em. While 910cca is good, why not have 980cca for the same money?

 

I was wondering just how long the battery cables would have to be or even how much free space is around the battery that it could move more than a few inches let alone rocket through the hood or through the bulkhead. I suppose if you sprayed it down with the stuff they used on "Christmas Vacation" you could be in trouble.

When I rolled my '89, both Optimas were ejected from the vehicle with such vilence that the cover was ripped off and the coils ripped out of the plastic. Sleeping and driving is bad, in case you didn't know.

 

if it was me i would not want to have it mounted on its side as far as apperance. is it too late to return it.

 

As far as the CCA, no biggie. The "standard" battery I replaced with an Optima had like 650 CCA, thats a lot less than 900 or more.

34R for the same price. It was their fault for installing the wrong one anyways.
