Broke this off my valve cover - what is it?
so here what's going on. i'm working on my valve covers, replacing the o rings and the gaskets while i was putting in the new o rings or what ever there called i broke this while doing so

i know what it does but i have no idea what's it's called and i was wondering if i can take that piece out and put a new one in or am i going have to get a new valve cover? all comments are welcome and thanks a bunch in advance

definitely your PCV valve. You should replace the grommet. Valve is about $6 and about $8 for the grommet (can only get at the stealer and they should have them in stock). Those are notorious for leakage (oil). I had to break my grommet to get it out. It doesn't go through the valve cover because of the plate underneath. Make sure when you take it out that you get all the little pieces. Use some motor oil on the grommet to get it in the hole and use some more on the PCV valve. It will be tight. You will be able to see that the grommet is pretty brittle.
