abs light

I was driving on the highway and all of a sudden my abs light comes on. I had gone wheeling this past weekend and thought that maybe dirt and mud had gotten in something and had caused it to go on. I sprayed everything down but it is still on. someone mentioned that my alt could be going bad. I have 189k on it w/o ever changing the alt. can anyone help/give advice?

Thanks

Matt

What gen truck/4runner are we talking about. If had the same problem once. On the 3rd gen the ABS sensors sits on the axel near the wheel, There might only be one on the rear axel (not sure). You can easily unscrew and pull to clean and see if this removes the ABS warning light.
Also follow the lines and see if they got damages while wheeling. There should be a picture on where to find the ABS sensor somewhere here on Yotatech.

From gadget response in another post:
Locate the wheel speed sensor and remove it. It might be covered with metal shavings and if so, wipe them off and reinstall it. That might clear the trouble.

i say alternator. our work truck just did that and the alternator died very shortly after. i think when the system starts to run low on charge (battery running out of juice since the alternator isn't working), I think the computer starts to shut down nonvital systems. the radio in the work truck also went out. Take it to Napa and they can usually check the alternator, although the last one I went to needed for it to be out of the truck. you can check the voltage across the battery, too. I believe that it should be about 14 V when the engine is running if it is charging properly. I don't remember if that is a test for a bad battery or bad alternator, but it seems like it could work for either.
