98 4runner keyless remote

Good day,
i just received 2 replacement remotes for my 98 runner, they are the grey model with 2 buttons. I still have one original factory remote that came with the 4runner when i bought it new.
I have the box under the drivers seat with the green button for programming.
My problem is that the 2 new remotes won't program and now the original remote won't work either!
I had the keys turned to "on" pressed the button for 3 seconds then pressed the new remote button, heard a couple of clicks, and some lights seem to blink- i think they were the dash lights, but when i tried the remote, nothing happens.
And as i said, even the original remote doesn't work either. Maybe i cleared all the remotes by accident as this isn't an easy position to view everything from.but i couldn't get the factory remote to reprogram either!
Are there different times for holding in the green button? Is the red security light suppose to be solid or blinking when the remote button is depressed?
Seems to be different parameters online for how to do this.
Also my owners manual says that the 98 4runnnner can only use the grey 2 button rs3000 remote, which io bought.
Any help is always appreciated and thanks in advance!
Dave

I also have a 98 same alarm and I have added more fobs without problems. My fobs are two button black, but only one button has ever been programmed. I have used the "Remote Control Programming" section of this guide:
http://www.parksoffroad.com/tacomamo...oteprogramming

I think the fobs have markings inside to identify which frequency they operate on. Not sure if there is more than one type/frequency sold for this year.
Also I have had to take apart my fobs many times as they seem to get gunked up over time, particularly the tiny push button switches will get stuck. I drip alcohol on those and work the button until the green gunk is washed away.

HI tns1, THANKS FOR THE HELP
I HAD TO CLEAR THE REMOTES ABOUT 4 OR 5 TIMES AND THEN I FINALLY GOT THE NEW REPLACEMENT AND THE FACTORY REMOTE TO WORK. THE FACTORY ORIGINAL WAS GETTING PRETTY BEAT UP AFTER 23 YEARS AND WAS STARTING TO GET FINICKY ALTHOUGH IT STILL WORKED.
FOR MY 98 4RUNNER, IN THE OWNERS MANUAL WAS AN INSERT STATING THAT THE 98 REQUIRES THE GREY CASE WITH BLACK BUTTONS REMOTE.THE BLACK CASE W/BLACK BUTTONS IS FOR PRE 98 4RUNNERS AND WON'T WORK IN A 98 4RUNNER!
ALSO THANKS FOR THE LINK AS ALL I CAME ACROSS WAS THE ACTUAL REPROGRAMMING AND ERASURE PARTS.I NEVER KNEW THE GLASS BREAKAGE FEATURE COULD BE TESTED,
OR ANY OF THE OTHER TOPICS, BUT THEN AGAIN, I NEVER HAD A NEED TO LOOK IN MY ORIGINAL OPERATING/OWNERS MANUAL FOR ANY OF THIS.
AGAIN, THANKS FOR THE HELP,
DAVE

When the plastic cases start to crack it lets more moisture/crud inside. I've had mine go thru the wash and still work after drying out though. You can still buy cheap look-alike replacement cases but they won't hold up like the originals.

My first of 2 that were included when i bought the truck i ran over with the tractor/ mower i was using when i was a municipal employee around 20 years or so ago! Been thinking about getting a replacement since then.
Boy, talk about procrastination!

One of my fobs finally failed for the last time. The internal push button switches were caked with green paste
and even after cleaning the fob light would just flash a few times. This is what it does if you hold the button down
- or if the switch is shorted internally. I used a soldering iron to swap out the switches from a new but incompatible fob.
Should you need to buy some replacements, I believe these would work:
