96 brake master cylinder brand
need to replace the brake master cylinder on my 96 4Runner.
Dealer wants $490. If I buy after market, what brands should I be looking for if I want quality?

That price sounds like a master and brake booster combo (new) of course.
If your looking for quality get an Aisin MC, readily available on line a lot less then dealer.
