4:56 or 4:88 Gearing Dilemma

Hello,

It's been awhile since I have posted a question, as I'm deployed on the Lincoln, doing our thing in Iraq. I maintain the Infrared/Laser system on the Tomcat, that is being used for guiding in all the laser guided bombs we drop.

Anyway, I have done quite a bit to my 95 'runner since I've had it. I have 31" tires, with the stock 4:30 gears, new V6, and a 5 sp.

I'm not happy with the acceleration at all, and I'm debating between 4:56 (came with if equipped with 31" tires stock), and 4:88 gears. In the Downey catalog, they recommend 4:88 gears with 31-32" tires.

I'm willing to give up a little gas mileage for better acceleration, but I'm debating between going with 4:56 and 4:88 gears. If I'm going through all the hassle to swap gears, I want to be happy with the change. Also, while I'm in there, I'm putting the LSD carrier from a 3rd Gen Supra Turbo in the rear, as per the write up on another site. I'm also plannning on checking out installing another LSD in the front, as the 2nd gen Supra's had a 7.5" LSD, which may work in the front.

Since I have limited/slow as hell access out here, if someone could email me the replies, I'd appreciate it. My address out here is: harmonrg@vf31.navy.mil

Thanks,
Rob

I would go to 4.88. 4.30 is a special Toyota half size. The real ring jumps are 4.10, 4.56, 4.88, 5.29

Unless you jump 2 rings or 1.5 in your case you will not even notice the change. I paid $1100 and I know the guys in Colorado are paying $1500, we are all jumping 2 rings. In my case 4.56 to 5.29. Others were 4.10 to 4.88 or 4.30 to 4.88. It's big money make the move worth while.

(I e-mailed him as well)

how about some engine mods? ... headers will increase power and so will an increased intake manifold. downey has some awesome stuff.

there are tons of stuff you can do to ur engine to put a few more ponys in it, and even increasing gas milage at times!

i have a 91 p/u 3.0v6 with 35s and i have 456 gears. its ok. could use more acceleration. im going to go with the intake manifold and headers someday.

I have 4.56 and am facing a similar dilemna. I will be installing 265/75r16 soon - basically a 32" tall tire. My acceleration also sucks with my 5 speed and am hoping the slight upgrade in tire size will not lead to big losses in acceleration. I get good gas mileage and am hoping I don't lose that either. I'll post my experiences when I change the tires. Sadly - the 3.slo is no powerhouse so you may never see great acceleration.

I have 4.10's. They were great, even when I had 265/75's, but they aren't so super nowadays.

Definitely 4.88's. If I thought I could get away with it, I may have considered 5.29's, but I do too much highway driving.

Modding the engine for more power? After my experience in a handful of situations that demand all bottom end performance, you can mod the engine all you want, it ends up back in the gearing camp anyhow. I suppose it all depends on what you want from your rig.

BTW, bring yourself back home safe and sound, the faithful have a hell of a party waiting for our bro's when you all get back!

Mike

I don't have anything to say about gears and don't really know much to share, BUT just in case you happen to make it back to this thread anytime...

This American is EXTREMELY proud to have you and your fellow servicemen out there doing your thing with so much personal sacrifice in the face of negative media and anti-war protestors (who, by the way, are using their rights of free speech earned by the blood and tears of former servicement).

Stay safe,
keep the faith,
and bomb the living $#!? out of Hussein and his scum!!!!!!
