2nd Gen. + 33s
1991 4Runner, 3.0 V6, 5-spd, stock gears (4.30?).
Are 33s really bad w/this setup in terms of power/fuel economy? I'm sure 4.88 or 5.29 would be recommended, but has anyone here tried 33s + stock gearing, and how was/is it?

I have 33" tires on my 91, I should have regeared the truck to compensate for the larger diameter. The end result was bad mileage and loss of 5th gear and ultimately the death of my poor V6 . If possible go with a 4.88 or 5.29 gear ratio and regain your gas mileage plus 5th gear. I believe the 4.88 is 19% lower and the 5.29 is 29% lower than your current setup (if you have 4.10's in the rear) Good luck.

Auto Tranny with factory 31's = 4.88's. 5Speed with factory 31's = 4.10 or 4.30 - not sure which. There's a decoder ring somewhere out there to make heads or tails of this.
EDIT: Yes I'm running 32's - 33's by the end of the summer. My Runner is no speed merchant, but it can get out of it's own way with the breathing mods I've done for it.
