2001 4-runner 4WD Light blinking
I haven't used my 4WD in a while and today attempted to put it into 4WD. The indicator light continues to keep blinking with the orange light in the center. I know something is wrong here. The last time I used my 4WD the indicator light blinked briefly and it then I had the solid green lights on the tires and was good to go. I have read several forums about this issue and the common conclusion is I need to either replace the sensor on the front differential or possibly clean the sensor. Anyone have any input and/or suggestions?
Thanks,
Kate

There is a bit of diagnostics that goes into the blinking 4wd light. Your research has gotten you the gist of the situation. There is a position switch on the front diff, and 4 on the transfer case. It could be any of those 5 switches, the one on the front diff is most common and arguably the easiest to get to. It could also be the contact tracks inside the actuator (this was my personal issue)
You’ll need a Multimeter and some contact cleaner to test the position switches and clean them. I would clean them all even if they are testing well.

This is a VERY long thread that wanders around a bit but has all the different components of the issue:
