1990 TOYOTA pickup JS ENGINE AND REPAIR
#1
Up for sale is another Toyota built by Js engine and repair in Buffalo Wyoming. This truck is a 1990 Toyota Flat bed. Here is the story.
I bought the truck from a local ranch (in 2005 or 2006) that had been using it for their daily work truck. It turns out that they bought the truck in 1990 and were the original owners. It was in running shape with only some minor problems. For a ranch, they kept it maintained quite well. It has a super heavy flat bed that makes the rear end squat down more than it should, and it is unknown if that is from them overloading the truck with hay and springing the springs. I think it is because the flat bed weighs a good 800-900 lbs. When we bought the truck, it idled rough and was super dirty inside and out. I bought a wrecked 1995 2wd truck and switched the interior out. The 1990 was all ranched out and smelled like wet sheep. Now the interior is in really good shape with only some minor problems, no more gross smell, theres a burn hole in the one seat from before and the seat was grey pleather that is stained so it is more black than grey now. Its actually a comfortable bench seat though and it isnt torn or ripped. One may not even notice the burn its so small.
I drove the truck for about 50 miles and then when it died on the side of the road one day, it was apparent that the charging system wasnt working. I replaced the battery, alternator, positive and negative battery cables and it still would fail to charge the battery. Then the check engine light went on about 2,000 miles after we bought the truck. They had recently had a ton of work done to the truck by a local shop(water pump, timing chain, tensioner and a clutch) but it was too late. The ranch was having issues with the truck over heating and then they had it fixed by a local shop that isnt too good with Toyotas. I learned that after about the 4th truck I ended up with, and every time the owners would mention that shop as the place that did the work. The head gasket went out in 2007 when I was taking it to my ranch to store it with the rest of my toyota fleet. We were already planning to rebuild the engine.
Here we are in 2009! I just got done installing a freshly rebuilt 22RE engine. Everything was cleaned and disassembled. All machine work was done by Top End Auto Machine in Sheridan Wyoming. It has a standard size crank, resized connecting rods, a valve job, new camshaft, and .030 oversize pistons. This engine was NOT built by me so I do not have the spec sheet. My grandpa built this engine, and it is probably his last engine he will ever build. He has been building toyota 22R and 22RE engines since the late 70's, building engines in general since the 40's. He could do it in his sleep! He is the one that taught me everything that I know so the engine was built by a very skilled professional. He worked in a toyota garage off and on since the early 80's in loactions ranging from Wyoming all the way to an assembly line in New Mexico.
This truck is just like any other truck engine I install. It has a new water pump, new belts, the starter was removed, cleaned up, and checked for wear. It still has over 90% of wear left, and looks like it may have been replaced with the clutch. The thermostat was replaced. Since it had heating issues, I installed a new radiator, and the old one was broken out of the hold down straps so it flapped around anyways. The alternator was replaced, along with the positive, negative and battery lead from the positive terminal to the fuse panel under the hood. The source of the battery not charging was determined to be a cut yellow wire right off of the plug for the alternator. I fixed that when I installed the engine and havent seen an alt light come on since. The check engine light went off as well once I got the new engine installed. It has a new clutch plate and disc(not the one the ranch had installed, another NEW one) as well as a new pilot bearing. The differential fluids as well as the transmission fluids have been replaced as well in addition to a full lube job on the chassis. (that grease gun most people dont use!!!)NO REMAN PARTS ON ANY OF THESE TRUCKS! I hate reman parts.
Everything was cleaned up on this engine before reassembly. Everything is super super clean right down to the intake ports on the intake manifold. Anyone who has ever worked on a 1990+ 22RE knows what a headache the wiring harness is. It goes right through the intake manifold, and it is virtually impossible to remove and clean, even worse than 1980's fuel injection and therefor most people dont even bother getting these ports clean, which usually results in a truck that idles rough. Not the case with this truck! I have pictures for anyone who wants them showing that the intake ports were cleaned up and free of carbon and other soot that always accumulates in there.
There is a CD player, but this is the strip down version of these trucks so it does not have a tach, cruise, or A/C. It has a temp gauge that works quite well though, and the cooling issue has for ever been resolved.
This truck still has good paint and body, but it was a ranch truck for almost 15 years so it has some bumbs, scrapes and dings. Pretty much every panel has something thats a little funky or slightly damaged. If that is a concern, come look at this truck and drive it before buying it! I WANT YOU TO DRIVE MY TOYOTAS BEFORE YOU BUY THEM! I dont want to sell someone something they dont want! This truck has dents and dings, but it hasnt ever been totaled or even wrecked. It is a super straight truck with zero rust. The paint is still glossy as well. The truck held up quite well to the ranch use, and there isnt any major off road damage. The muffler is dinged up, and the rear drive line came off at some point and dented the gas tank. It also appears that it has had a newer muffler replaced, as it isnt rusting apart the way they usually do. At some point, it has had some new shocks put on, presumably with the other work that was done to the truck, and it has fairly nice Toyo mud and snow tires. (like 75% tread wear left, easily.)So I think that they had a ton of work done to this truck about a year or so prior to my purchase.
I have a bed that I may put on it if it doesnt sell as well as another set of springs that I may put on if I replace the bed. This truck is mechanically sound. Everything has been inspected and is in tip top shape. It has some funkiness on the body and in the interior, but it runs and drives like a dream. I am asking $6000 or best offer because it has so much work done. Pics available upon request!
My name is James. My email is James.Harriet@gmail.com and my cell number is on the truck. If you want to look at the truck or have more questions, please let me know! Thanks so much!
