Edit: well, i hit enter by accident so now the post title is super! awesome... Maybe an admin can fix that. 1985 Shortbed PU Red/Tan super clean $5500 w/o tires
Greetings,
I'm sort of annoyed how CL has taken over the used car searching market, so I'm going to give you guys a head start here. (Like any decent forum member would do!)
Runs like a top. 178,500 on the chassis. Motor rebuilt at 166k.
I spend several years searching for a truck this clean. I've only owned it for about 3.5 years, but I've purchased 3 other toyotas since this one haha. I'm wrapping up building a house by myself, have a chinook project to undertake, as well as I really would like to get my Scout back on the road. Oh yeah, and a baby on the way. So unfortunately, in addition to needing the funds, that means the Cherry Tomato needs to go. Someone will get lucky with this one (in my opinion). Bought this from the second owner (the original owners friend) who purchased it in 2004. It came from Jerome, Oregon - way eastern Oregon and was used as a hunting truck. I'm pretty sure by the condition it was probably garaged for a period of it's life. In 2004 it moved to Bend, OR and that's where it is today. This was a very unique build for 1985. From the factory - NO SMOG equipment. This is how it came stock, no smog pump, no egr, no nothing. The only belt up front runs the alternator and waterpump. No power steering, no A/C compressor, stripped down, basic and super easy to work on. It even has the original distributor boot - I never knew those even existed.
- Engine rebuild at 166k, BRAND NEW toyota head. Deschutes Automotive Machining did the work.
- all new gaskets all the way around. One small sweat up front and one small sweat in the rear. I haven't diagnosed because it's not enough to form a drip
- Lots of new plastic, electronic, window crank,.. wear related parts have been replaced.
- Lots of spare parts that will come with if asking price is met, carbs, interior stuff, etc.
- 4" lift? I think it's 4" anyways. Rancho Shocks
- Smittybuilt tube bumpers (need to be blasted and re-powedercoated at this point)
- off road fog lights (freakishly bright, other drivers will not be happy if you have these on)
- comes with a diamond plate tailgate wrap. I personally hate diamond plate, but feared the worst removing it. Turns out it's one of the nicest tailgates I've seen. One hinge needs to be tightened but doesn't effect anything.
- Bench Seat cover - I've never removed it, purchased it with it on there, and like the diamond plate I'm convinced the seat is probably in dire straights but super comfy with it on there and haven't had a reason to remove it. The seat could be in mint condition for all i know..
- I've rebuilt several toyota axles. I haven't broken into either of these, but that would be my next step if I were keeping it. No need to do anything right now, but if it were me, I would repack the front bearings and swap in new seals. Do an audit of the spring bushings etc at the same time.
I have a ton of info on everything I've done to this truck in the last three years, point is it's running like a top and has very little rust. The bed has some seam rust starting to show though this last year, it has been mitigated from the inside, but ideally to save this been from the fate most others have seen, I would have it dipped and fixed now. Or you can drive for the next 30 years and not care about it. I seriously considered keeping this truck for the chinook build, and merely swapping the box onto it (as this is the perfect setup for a chinook), but I don't have the heart to see this truck go that route.
As a recap - the only thing this truck needs is a tailgate hinge tightened (tight space to reach into).
I'm keeping the tires and wheels for a Chinook project, so the price without is $5,500. I can put some rollers on, or get you into the same setup for about $6,500. I have some 31" TSLs as well, but I think this truck looks best with 33" pizza cutters.
