Found one of these at the local auto parts place for 160$. It's light enough to be put on top in the Wilderness rack and quiet enough to run up there and not be noticed. I was thinking that something like this would be a good addition to the 4runner. It'll run 8 hours at half load on 1.2 gallons of fuel so it could be used to run an electric blanket or refrigerator over night as long as neither one of them draw too much.

Any thoughts? Any one use something similar?

I'm still trying to get my rig to the point where I can go out for a few days at a time and be self sufficient.

I think I personally would be more interested in the 1200W 4-stroke generator they have:

It's slightly quieter, has the same run time, and more importantly runs on a 4-stroke engine. It is slightly larger and heavier however.

 

Is a 4 stroke better than a 2 stroke when it comes to generators?

 

I would say yes because they take less maintenance and will tend to last longer without the need of a rebuild (as long as you change the oil regularly).

 

I hate to say, you can't beat the Honda generators. They do cost more, a lot more, but they are worth it. I have pounded my 2ks, running while hammering it on an ATV and they haven't missed a beat.

 

A 2 stroke gasoline motor runs "dirtier" than a 4 stroke simply because of design. You end up with fuel mixed into the crank case. You tecnically get twice the power pulses per revolution, giving the motor more torque for the size though. In almost all cases though, a 4 stroke gas motor is a much more refined machine.

Now 2 stroke turbo diesel on the other hand, that's just a work of beauty.

 

I agree my parents still have 5.5k watt generator from 1980. My dad used to use it when he was in the carpet cleaning business, now we just use it when needed. Weighs a TON though.
