Diesel swap into a 79-83 4x4 swap ideas

I have seen lots of write ups and postings about 85-up trucks but not too many about 1st gen trucks, I have emailed tdswaps about there kits they sell for the mb617 but have not received anything back, I have read some neg. feedback of people not getting the correct parts or not getting parts at all, has anyone used them? I have been leaning towards a 617 swap but I don't want to relocate the radiator, I would like something all mechanical and not computer controlled I have a w56 trans swaped into it already, I am a VW tech by trade so I know a lot about those engines and in my opinion they did not start making any kind of useable power until the 1.9 tdi but is very computer controlled. any ideas or input is welcome thanks a lot.

Saw this baby posted on craigslist awhile back. I assume its still for sale cuz the link still works. I'd love to have it sitting in my driveway.

I guess it's still computer controlled after looking back at it but still cool nonetheless.

good find I like that it fits like factory, just those pesky control modules to deal with, and I know how much they don't like water. I have seen a few early Toyota 4x4 with a VW 1.6 from a mid 80s jetta or rabbits but they have half the HPs and not great torque # either.

Imho stay away from tdswaps. u could take the 1.9tdi in it with a 4bt pump to avoid all of the electrical. i have seen om617 in a first gen but the core support was heavily cut.

I found a place that sells a mechanical pumps to convert a tdi. So that's a good idea. I'll look into it.
