This is an interesting swap. I'm assuming you are using the 1z since it is a 97. What are you going to do about the wiring, or you going to convert it back to all mechanical. I know the TRi's can be pretty wiring intensive. I am not super familiar with the 1z as we don't see too many of them around here. Most of them and ALH's and we have a BRM as well.

Powerstrokejoe, I did use the 1Z and kept the electronic controls. It's three wires, so, while the wiring isn't super easy (some would say it is), I'd say it's not super difficult. TDIClub is loaded with good info.

TDITOY, you've obviously done your homework, too. Oil pan clearance is easy, esp. with a slight lift. The solid axle... is one of the best trucks ever built. The G52 trans can handle the torque (R151 is of course better). Parts are cheap. The 1Z is solid and pre-smog. Stock, the truck moves right along and idles over anything you point it at in 4lo. Hope my thread helps. Just email me with any questions.

I have an ALH out of a 2001 beetle, looking for a 1z. Still debating on using electronics or not, and I plan on running a r151. I am also putting in a doubler with 5.29's, linking the front and 63's in the rear on 40in iroks
