Power steering fluid for camry

I have a friend who has a 1996 toyota camry and i recently threw some power steering fluid into her resivor. It was making noises as she was turning so i figured it was the PS fluid. I went to autozone and got some Prestone Power steering fluid plus stop leak I have been looking on line and people have been using ATF fluid and some Dexcron stuff? Will it matter whats inside her PS pump now or should i flush it out and put new stuff in it?

thanks and sorry for the long post

matt

Yes, flush it out. https://www.yotatech.com/forums/show...power+steering

If it hasn't started leaking yet you may be ok. It seems the seals and o-rings in the pump don't like PS fluid as much as Dexron III ATF. My manual (93 truck) says to use ATF. The noises are a worry though, if the pump was run dry at some point it may be toast. If it is just leaking a rebuild kit can be had for cheap.

Look at the cap of her PS and see what it calls for. But most of the Toy's use ATF.

I should have mentioned that when I flushed with the method in the link posted above I used 2 quarts of ATF just turning the wheel from lock to lock and back to straight again. I stopped the motor every few seconds to refill.

The PS pump seal kit for our trucks is only about $25, so it's not that bad. It sounds like maybe it was already leaking huh, if it needed fluid.

i don't think PS fluid will damage anything, it's just not the best stuff to run in a toyota.
