fuel pump? or fuel filter?

ok, so heres the story 93 22re exauhst broken...no cat just straight pipe..loud as all hell...but sounds cool when its WOT. So, i opened her up, and when i did. it spuutered really bad.. let off and it was sputtering when the throttle was open just a little bit maybe 25% come to a light, at idle (very bad and eratic idle) truck dies...start it back up, gotta give it gas to just keep it alive and its sputtering really bad. now, when the key is in the ignition, and in the start position but the truck isnt on, i can hear a high pitch noise from my gas tank. like its doin somethen. any ideas??? maybe fuel filter? maybe the fuel pump? possibly dirty injectors? and gas mileage has gotta reall bad, but that could have to do with lack of exahst.

before you do soemthing expensive like get your injectors cleaned or get a new fuel pump do the simple thing first...swap out your fuel filter shouldn't be that tought but I dunno where it is on a 22re...maybe one of the 4 cyl guys will chime in on this

Yeah, I would try changing out the fuel filter first. There is always the chance it is clogged. I think the 22RE fuel filter is very hard to get to though. I believe it is under the intake manifold.

Yeah, that filter is right under the EFI on an EFI Model. you can get at it a little easyer by removing the access cover on the wheel well. Also you can relocated it on the wheel well pretty easily.
