alternator test

Can an alternator be tested without yanking it out? My three year old Optima redtop went kaput last week (on last day of warranty ) and I don't want to ruin a new one.

according to my Haynes manual you can test it while its still in the vehicle..............says you just need a good voltage tester.

but keep in mind its only just a Haynes manual

What are the amp specs supposed to be when the lights and blower fan are running? The stock alt is a 60 amp, right??

the book says the amp specs should be 10A with the engine at idle to 2000 rpms.

with high beams and heater blower (and 2000rpms) it should be at 30A or more.

i believe the stock alts are only rated from 40-45A
