Removing diff carrier from '85 front axle....

Okay, so the carrier nuts are all removed from holding the third member in the axle housing. It's about 1/2" spread out from the housing, and I've tried prying, but it won't come out. Any suggestions?

Do I remove the large nut at the end that bolts to the prop shaft?

Thanks---

the SAS noob.

Have you pulled everything else off the axle...such as pulling out the axle shafts?

The chunk comes out as one piece and just leaves and empty housing.

A FSM might help you visualize. Check Roger Brown's website a.k.a. 4crawler.com

yup, the diff is the last part to pull out. Axles have to come out first.

crap. That's crappy. I was hoping to avoid that, I thought I could pull out the third like the rear does. Well, looks like I HAVE to do my gears and locker before the SAS.

How in the hell can I get those conical washers out of the steering bar thing on top of the knuckle? I've got 4 that I haven't been able to remove yet (and it's pissing me off) lol.

to remove the rear third member you also have to pull the rear axles....
the cone washers on the steering arm can be a pain, put the nut back on so its flush with the stud an give it a good hit with a hammer.
but to pull the axles you dont have to remove the steering knuckles.
remove the hubs and spindles and then pull the axle out, then pull the third.

I would highly recommend servicing the knuckles too. This requires complete disassembly. Have fun

You need a FSM bro. The rear is the same way.

Brass drift and a 3 lb sledge then try and work them with a small flat head screw driver, spin them that is. If they won't spin then work your way around the studs with the brass drift and hammer and then the steering arm itslef. Don't get frustrated and fubar the threads.

You can Google chat me if you need something else.
