Ignition system problems
Hey all,
Well I'm brand new to yotatech and I already am in need of your help. About a year ago I purchased from a friend a 1985 yota Hilux. This poor thing had been poorly modified by a previous owner prior to my friend picking it up and for what ever reason they decided to rip out the 22re that was in it originaly and put in a 80' 20r. Well the engine was kinda hashed together with wiring and the headgasket had gone so I decided to do an entire engine rebuild. Well a couple months later working on it as I could everything is preened and polished and back together with new bearings, gaskets, and rings and when I go to start it for the first time...No spark. Well examining the rats nest of wiring to the older spark control module I decided to follow a write up found on zuwharrie.com where you swap a much cheaper chevy ign control module in and simplify the wiring. Granted it had mixed reviews about it working for some and not others but I figured I'd at least give it a go....No spark. So now im replacing all older ignition related items figuring it would be for the better anyway, New coil, plugs, wires, pick up coil in distributor, distributor cap, rotor and all the new wiring I did for the chevy ign control. Still no spark, I figure well screw it i'll go back to the old yota ign control that I know was working prior to the rebuild and hook up the new wires to the old ign mod. No spark. I have 12V at both - and + of coil the ohm meter verifies that the signal from the pick up coil is there and I made sure that I had a good switch ign voltage powering the module. I am so fed up and lost I dont know what to think anymore. Its a shot in the dark without pictures I know but I'm hoping that you guys and gals may have an idea that I've overlooked. I'll try to post picks of everything as soon as I get back home tonight.
P.S. other notes I should mention...yes the distributor rotor does rotate and yes I put the engine in TDC compression while lining up the distro. This issue seems to plague this series of earlier yota's from posts I've read here. But if there is an answer to be had no one has come back to describe their solution.
Thanks much in advance!

Hey again guys and gals. So here's an update...I tinkered with the ignition module some more and found out that it wasnt getting a good connection to the switch ign voltage. After correcting that it started up and is running now...sorta anyway, Well I'm going to continue tinkering with it in the mean time and see where that goes. If there is anyone near New Mexico in need of one of these trucks give me a shout I have her posted on Craigslist now for $2100. Thanks again

Hey. Sorry it took me quite some time to reply to your question. Yes I do still have the chevy ign box, but its not in the yota anymore. I have to re-wire back in the old ign control module and everything worked much better. From what ive read the Chevy box will work, but it has to be on a VERY good ground to function.
