electrical problem

Have an 86 runner and only my headlights work. Nothing else elecrtical works. Im at a complete loss of ideas where to begin looking for the problem. It wont start (can be bump started though and it runs fine) No dash lights or accesory lights, turn sigs, brake lights, rev lights, cig lighter, stereo, gauge lights. Checked under the hood and found that one of the fuses or relay was blown. Its a 30a found in the box on the passenger side i believe it said glow somethin. Any ideas?

i am no expert on electrical systems or anything but i will throw my own 2 cents in, if nothing else it will keep this thread new and towards the top so ppl see it. dreamz i'm hoping that you have pulled and checked all the fuses, and when you say nothing works besides headlights is that just after you have replaced the bad fuse or after you have replaced the fuse and tried starting it up. are your headlights stock ones or do you mean after market fog lamps, and do your headlights work well and stay on. All i can do is offer a little bit of advice and sympathize with you, cuz i have had to do a lot of electrical work in my runner and it is the most frustrating thing you will ever do, and since mine is a 93 sr5 with all kinds of these wussy power options it is a nightmare, I dont think mine even obeys the laws of electricity. If i were you i would try to get my hands on a good wiring diagram, check all fuses especially in engine compartment, try turning on electrical things in different sequences to see if you can pinpoint were the bad circuit is, it has to be a wire live wire going to ground or a main circuit that is screwed up somewhere, electrons didnt just stop flowing through your vehicle. good luck

well i was ust shy of ripping every last wire out of the thing and decided it would be best to leave it to the pros. I really hate taken it to them but they know what their doin and i ?s my head lights were the only thing that worked even when everything else just dyed. Im guessin the EFI was workin to cause it continued to run fine. This trucks been a nightmare but i really like it and get compliments on it all the time! Some days I just wanna give it away or roll it off a cliff and other days I get all sorts of ideas to do to it. Anyhow THANKS for postin up to help.

You have all ready found the bad fuse. Its P.I.T.A because the wires bolt up to the fuse, you cant just pull it out. Why did the fuse blow, the only time I have seen that fuse blow was from shorting the pos terminal on the battery to the hood. Sparks all over the place. Good Luck.
