My battery bracket is coated with a rubberised/plastic coating. It has started to rust underneath and crack. Can I just scrape and repaint with regular Tremclad paint or do I need to use a similar rubberised coating such as rocker guard?

I'm sure they intended the rubber coating to be some sort of low-level insulation if you could call it that. All I know is I'm going to be completely replacing mine pretty soon as it's getting really bad. The one tip I would have is to make sure you neutralize any acid that might be on it, otherwise the paint will peel right away...

Usually once the rust takes hold, it's gonna get ugly. You may have to use those rust treatment products like Por 15 or Extend which turns the rust stable so it won't rust under your paint finish. It may be cheaper to replace those items, or if you want to preserve them, proper prep is key to a long lasting repaint. Good luck.

Thanks Brian
I was planning on stripping it down to bare metal and starting from a bare coat but Shane brought up a good point about residual acid on the metal.
Ideas for how to make sure the acid is all gone??

The old school method is mix some Baking Soda (Arm & Hammer) with some water. Drop the pieces in and watch it fizz. Once the fizzing stops, there should be no acid. Rinse with clean water and dry. You can repeat this process a few times to make sure. Good luck.
