I recently bought a 1985 pick up w/22R. 40k miles. On two of the plugs were installed extenders .Anyone know why these might have been installed.

They are ordinarily used to prevent, or delay, oil fouling of spark plugs on worn engines.

That's never a good sign. You might want to do compression AND leak down tests ASAP to see if there's something up. If both tests are good just install the plugs directly in the head like normal.
