my yoda is smoking out the tail pipe

what color is the smoke?
if it's bluish, at startup, it's probably valve guides like you said. leak down test will confirm this.
if it's not bluish, but white, it could be your HG starting to fail. check the top of your oil cap and your rad. cap. if you're due for an oil change soon, go head and do it so you can check the oil for the warning signs of milky coolant/oil mix. a block test will confirm this.
good luck.

It could be the rings, mine did that before I had the engine rebuilt, it was pretty tired. A little bit of bluish smoke when you first start it up after it sitting for a while is valve guide seals. White smoke at start up when it sits for a while is usually just condensation in the exhaust burning out. now if the engine is warm and you get on it and it smokes, its probably rings, just keep an eye on your oil level.
You also said it does it when the engine is cold, it could just be that your engine is running rich, need to do something with your carb!

it could be rings. but the leakdown test will allow you to isolate the problem specifically.
do a search for compression testing and leakdown testing. they will each explain how adding oil to a cyl. during the comp. test can tell you if its a ring problem; or "rocking" the cyl. around TDC during the leakdown test will tell you if its an intake, exh. valve, or cylinder leak.
there's lots of info on these tests and i'm pretty sure you can "borrow" the testers from auto parts stores everywhere.
mine was rings. that's why it's off road right now. =(
