Has anyone fixed windshield damage a repair shop says is too big?

What had to be a very LARGE rock hit my windshield yesterday. There are slivers of glass in the cab. I took the truck to two repair shops today. Both said the damage is too big to be repaired.

Has anyone used a kit to repair damage like this? I just want to fill in the starburst area. I'm not required to have the truck inspected any more so not worried about that.

Yes the windshield needs to be replaced. Once it's out though bodywork needs to be done for the dreaded windshield area rust. I'm not ready to get in to that repair just yet.

Unfortunately, I am pretty sure the glass shops are right.

That is much larger than just a rock chip, and any filler repair won't accomplish much.

What were you hoping to accomplish with the repair?

I'd like to seal it so water/dirt doesn't get in it.

I’m sorry to hear about your windshield, it must be frustrating, especially with the rust hiding underneath. As for temporarily fixing the star-shaped area in your windshield, a windshield repair kit can actually be a good solution if you just want to fill in the chips and limit the damage from getting worse before you can replace the entire windshield
