Binding brakes on Hilux

Hi,

This is my first visit to your site. I'm in South Africa and drive a 2004 Toyota Hilux Raised Body Double Cab 4x2 (difflock) with 3.0 Turbodiesel engine.

Only have one problem. When driving it down at sea level the brakes keep on binding. It feels like you are pulling away with the parking brake applied. You need to hook your foot behind the pedal and pull it forward to disengage the brakes. Problem not experienced when travelling at higher altitudes.

Anyone experience this and is their a solution? Has the Toyota techies baffled. They checked the whole system including the proportioning valve (load sensing valve) and found nothing wrong.

Hope someone has a solution.

Welcome to Yotatech. The only thing I can think of is there is still some vacuum being applied to the booster when you let off the pedal. It would be a very slight amount, just enough to be a bit below atmospheric pressure at sea level. Have you tried disconnecting and plugging the vacuum hose when the brakes are dragging. Other than that sorry don't know.

What part of SA are you in, I spent some time in Pretoria and Jo'burg way back in the 70s.

Thanks. I'll try that.

I'm in Krugersdorp. That's about 20 km's to the west of Johannesburg. What did you do in South Africa? Just on holiday?

My parents emigrated to South Africa from Scotland when I was 8, and we spent the next 8 years in SA and Rhodesia. We left Rhodesia in 76, and ended up in Canada.

Another thing to check out:You might want to look closer at the calipers. Check to see if the pistons are moving freely. They may be getting stuck. I have seen new calipers with bad pistons in them. They are re-buildable. Not difficult either. But first, pull the calipers off, press the brake to extend the brake pistons, and pull off the rubber boot. Clean and place never seize all around the caliper. Compress the calipers with a c-clamp and repeat a few times re-cleaning and re-greasing. Just a thought.
