Advice on trading up 4-runners

My '93 has 240000 odd miles on it and the rust is getting bad. I don't know that I want to fix the rust for something with those miles. I'm planning on going to see two that are for sale near me and I'm not sure what better option is since I'm used to the 2nd gen, and am looking to get a 3rd gen.

One is a '97 limited with 140000 miles asking $6999 and the other is a 2001 with 160000 miles asking $8595.

What should I be looking for, and is there an inherent benefit of one over the other.

Thanks for any response. You all helped me when I had to take the beast in for the recall 2 years ago.

well since they both have 3.4v6s i would have both inspected but go with the one that has the least amount of miles make sure the suspension works and everything else also go with the one that has the better paperwork

Hmmmm. that's a tough one. 4yrs newer - 20k more - $1600 more. Or 4yrs older, 20k less, $1600 less..... Do you have any pics of them?

The 97 is black with tan leather interior. the drivers seat is torn on the side ( so is the cloth one of my '93.

The '01 is silver, not sure of the interior

The guy I spoke to about the '97 said that the rear "something" didn't lock, but the only time you'd need it would be climbing up rocks. He said the former owner never used it so it is frozen up. He reassured me that the regular 4wd was fine.

Damn the 01 is sick! I'd go for that one, especially if the e-locker is possibly seized on the 97. Like the wheels better on the 01 and look at that hood. Sweet! What are the NADA's?

The e-locker could be a pretty easy fix...

I'd get the one with better paperwork myself.

You're not interested in finding a manual (assuming both of those are auto's)??

I wouldn't worry about the E-locker - surely it can be fixed.

Would I ever use the e-locker? Is it really just for extreme off-roading?

I drove the '97. What a difference that .4 makes in the engine.

I haven't been to see the '01. The guy got it at an auction to sell... So I wouldn't have any idea of the maintenance or mechanics of it.

What are NADA's? ( sorry, I'm a newbie...)

My two cents is look out for the more modern units with traction control. My buddy has a 2001 and traction control blows on the trail. If he engages the center locker it defeats the traction control. The other thing to look out for with those are aftermarket alxe & diff mods you might want to do later. He seems to have troubles finding lockers that work with traction control. Bearings and wheel sensors get weird too if you lift it and put bigger tires on. I personally have a 2006 4Runner and traction control is on no matter what mode you're in (2H, 4H, 4L, center diff locked or unlocked). That sucks on the trail too. There are probably mods to get rid of traction control all together but, like I say, my two cents is avoid it. Too much fancy crap if you ask me.

My main 4x4 is a 1989 truck. No freaking airbags, no freaking traction control! Thank God.
