Well here goes,
Ive been reading over this board for a week or so now...just a great wealth of info here. Props go out to all the guys who chip in around here and help with the not so bright guys like myself.

I have purchased GM trucks my entire life, Ive owned around 6 of them anywhere from 1965-2003. Im sick and tired of fixing them, thats all there is to it. Iam in an area thats close to the arctic and needless to say I need something reliable.

I have been searching for an older Toyota to work on (wet my feet) and came across this.....

89 reg cab 5 speed 3 litre 4x4.
He assures me there is no rust, things are all gone over and the truck is perfect......interior and all.
130k miles, he wants 6500 CDN and Ive got him down to 5900.

The head gasket hasnt been done on it.

How much life would you expect out of this engine if I did the HG?

Assuming the HG is in good shape and a compression test passes with flying colors (I would ask to have it done before buying it) then it can last easy 250k or more.

 

if you ask me, if you take good care of it, it should exceed 300k, assuming the HG's are good, etc.

Im a little freaked out paying that kinda money for something with that many miles. Dont mind paying if its worth it.

 

the early 3.0s didnt have HG problems (88-90 i believe). they came from the factory with an asbestos HG taht the engine was designed to use. teh problem is with the later engines that didnt recieve the asbestos HG.

That looks to be an extrememly clean truck. go for it. fromt he pics the tire tread seems to be a bit low.

 

Besides the inside of the bed the truck looks very clean. But here i would maybe pay 4500 usd for a good deal. I used an online converter and it came out to like 6200 usd. I think thats a little much, and its only a single cab. But those trucks are fairly common here and we dont have to worry about rust. Im in Sac, C.A.

bc and Alberta that is...those trucks go for lots....anywhere btween 5-9,000 cdn for the 89-95 years.....and that in really nice shape.....they also hold their value much better than other brands.....just look in the trader...still have 80's trucks selling for 3-4000

i do notice that it isnt an sr5...(bench seat, no tach, and black mirrors)..and it isnt an xtracab, so that might infulennce your buying price...



and that is one clean engine bay.....

I paid 6,000 for mine....its an xtracab 91 with the v6....so i think you're right in the ballpark

 

Price seems a little high to me. Might be worth the trip to an area where the trucks aren't going for as much. The way the dollar is going, in a few months you'll be able to head south and pick up a nice truck for $5000 USD or ~$3 CDN.

 

Well, I think everyone should realize that only in recent months has the US dollar dropped versus the Canadian Dollar. For many many years our dollar was worth 1.20-1.40 Canadian. Recent months has shown a dramatic shift in the exchange rate. Their market is much more stable at this time, so the equivelant price he is paying is more like 4500-4700 USD.

I think for the condition of the truck that it's worth it. It's hard to judge from our position, because we're not accustomed to what vehicles cost, what 4wheel drive adds in value, etc.

If the price feels "fair" or slightly high to you because of the mileage, then I'm willing to bet it's fair in our terms. Toyota's certainly can't be compared to Chevy's when it comes to mileage. I hear Chevy guys cheering about their truck having 130,000 miles and only having gone through one tranny so far. Chevy standards are way different. Japanese vehicles have high resale because they last longer..period.

 

Well Im located about 2 hours south of the North West Territories in Alberta so it would be tough to justify driving down to the US to pickup a truck. I wish the dollar took off before I moved awhile ago, Iam originally from the Toronto area.

I would really like an ext cab as I do a lot of fishing and it would be nice to keep my gear in.

Ill go take a look and if I cant get a really good deal I will leave it until I find something a little better.
