22RE running rough after rain.

Hi, this is my first post. Nice way to introduce myself, asking questions, right? I know, sorry.

Anyways, I have an 84 pickup that was swapped with a newer 90's 22RE, also its on 33's with stock gears. I know that hard on it, I'm trying to change that. But anyways, The previous owner told me it needed a tune up when I bought it, so I got right on that. Replaced the plugs, wires, cap, and rotor. Used Dielectric grease on all the connections, and even smeared some on the new O-ring under the distributor, making sure it was only on the outer edge of the dist.

Ever since I bought it, whenever it rains, it becomes gutless for the first few thousand RPMs, and will suddenly pick up. It also has a hard time holding speed. I cant even used overdrive. I searched for the same problem, and found a couple guys that had it but no report as to what fixed it.

So far, I thought it was the ECM getting wet since my passender side floor would be a little damp after a rain. I waterproofed it and repaired the rust holes in the cab. No longer gets wet, but it still reacts the same after a rain.

I'm stumped? This is the first Toy I've owned, so I'm still learning. But I just cant apply any of my previous knowledge to this problem. I figure its electrical, but just dont know where to check. Anyone have any other ideas?

Get a windex bottle filled with tap water, and start spraying different electronic devices, and see if the problem comes up. I had a similar situation, and it turned out to be my igniter. The case was not sealed, letting in water. Resealed it and never had the problem again.

Well, thanks for the input guys. But it wont be of any use anymore, I swamped it at the local park today. Its still running, but burning oil and leaking some from the front of the motor, at about half a quart in 3 hours of wheeling, and has barely any power. Alternator must have died too, it wouldnt restart when I got it home.

Time to take care of all the suspension and steering work I wanted to do. Give me some time to think about what I want to do with the motor.
