What Lift does my 02 Taco have?
#2
Thats a Trailmaster 6" kit. I have some of the parts of it on my 4runner as well.
However, the top mount, where the strut attaches to is "custom", and looks even scarier than the normal mount!! I would assume that is what is making the noises.
Now the strut itself does blow out, but it looks like you have the Gabriel replacement struts in there, rather than the stock TM strut, which blow out in a few weeks. But the struts which actually slide into the housing are definetly looking BUSTED. You will want to trade those out for sure.
I actually have the correct mounts(used) and brand new in the box Gabriel struts for this kit. If your interested, let me know, I will sell for cheap. ($40 for the struts, and $20 for the mounts).
You can also do away with these silly struts by buying the Fabtech lift spindles, which are about 2-3x beefier than the stock spindles. (Check my signature line below). You can get them for about 400 each through a dealer. Yeah its a rip off, but you'll have a pretty awesome setup if you do that.
Make sure all the bolts on that lift are torqued correctly to spec (get from TM website or email).
I've had this lift on my truck for about 5 years and have had no problems with it offroad (knock on wood). I did destroy one of the mounts, and thus made me buy the fabtech spindles. IF you take care of the lift, it should be fine.
What I would do right now is lower those coilovers a bit (your CV's look really angled).
Here is a link to some information about the kit:
