Trouble with 93' S1 pickup tranny
Hello, nubee here. I've got a problem with my 93 Toyota S1(I think thats the model #) 5 speed manual transmission. Yesterday, I had to use the pickup to pull a Celica thats been sitting in my yard for a year. Apparently, the brakes are frozen up on the Celica (or something) as we couldn't move it by pushing it manualy.
So I hooked it up to the truck, and had my wife pull it. At first, it wouldn't budge, but finally it moved. However, this put a real strain on the clutch, as I could smell it after she stopped.
Today, I started to drive into town, and everything was fine..untill I tried to shift into third gear. The lever felt kind of wierd, and it started to grind. I could feel the gears trying to engage, and actually felt third gear slow down. But I couldn't shift into it. So I went to fourth. Same thing, except it did shift into gear..barely. As soon as I started to slow down, it popped out of gear.
Later today, I was able to shift into third, a few times, but now it won't. I don't think this is the clutch, as it shifts perfect into first, second, and fifth. I don't even know if this problem is related to the pulling of the Celica or not. Maybe its a coincidence, but I doubt it.
Anyway, anyone got any ideas what could cause this, and how I should proceed or inspect this? And btw, is there an access panel under the carpet, to pull the top off the tranny where the shift lever goes into it? I'm certainly no mechanic, but I am mechanically inclined. I have rebuilt and installed 4 different engines and my dad was a mechanic and taught me a lot about inspecting for problems. So I'm not afraid to dig into a tranny. At least a manual one. Forget the automatics though.
Thanks
Rick
